Papia! Papia! Ducks & Raki Ghosts!

The Bavarian Duck

Is it a goose or is it a duck?

“Papya! Papya! Maggie Thatcher!” shouts Nikos. I had to question why he was chanting this. It made no sense…..but he was talking to a duck……or a goose. On closer listening I realised he was not in fact referring to the late unlamented premier but was chatting in Greek. Of course, it’s only natural that poultry understand Greek.

“Papia! Papia! Ma ti papa!” shouts Nikos. He has no doubts. It’s a duck. [translation: “Duck! Duck! But what a duck!”]

Others are less convinced and insist it’s a goose. So the debate rages. Fortunately, at the season’s close, Nikos took him to a farm, full of feathered friends.

The Raki Ghost

It’s a dangerous drink, raki, particularly when laced with honey.

I woke up one night in a start. There was someone banging on the studio door. Then the door opened and a woman’s voice called out, “Clean oven!” The door slammed. I jumped up and tried the door. It was locked!

Nikos reckons honey raki is the worst. I hadn’t been drinking. It was our first night………
